Southern Broken-Dash (Wallengrenia

This species is often confused with the northern
broken-dash in the field. Field guides always point out the backwards
3 on the underside of the forewing on both species. The northern
broken-dash is usually browner than the southern, but because of variations
in color of individuals, this doesn't always help. To distinguish the
two species, check the fringes. The fringes on the forewing and
hindwing of southern broken-dash are different colors. The hindwing
fringe color is orange while the forewing color is darker. See the photo
